Savannah-Chatham's new school superintendent, Dr. Thomas Lockamy, attended today's announcement on the truancy plan. It was one of his first public events.
He says keeping students from skipping is one of the best ways for the school system to improve.
"I plead with parents and the community and everyone to help do that," he said. "You've given me that assurance when I decided to accept your contract to come to Savannah, and I'm certain I will continue to have that support."
The board of education officially approved Lockamy's five-year contract last week.
