School Board: Students Can Avoid Controversial Book

Students in McIntosh County do not have to read the Pulitzer Prize-winning book The Color Purple and other books their parents find too explicit.

That's the word from the McIntosh County school board after parents complained there was graphic language and violence in some of the books on the summer reading list.

The board agreed to add more book choices and to allow students to opt out of reading books their parents find inappropriate.

The board did not ban any books.
