Events Honor Memory of Bluffton Mayor Pro Tem

The Bluffton community is mourning the death of one of its leaders. Flags throughout the area are at half staff today, after Bluffton's mayor pro tem and poet laureate, Oscar Frazier, died yesterday from a rare kind of liver disease. Frazier served on the town council since 1999, but residents say he did so much more than that in the community.

"He was on the board for the Boys and Girls Club, the YMCA, he was a churchgoing man and founded his own church," said resident Babbie Guscio. "He was a leader in so many ways, and he'll be greatly missed by this community."

Beaufort County parks employees in Bluffton are sponsoring a softball tournament this Saturday. All proceeds will go to the Oscar Frazier Fund:

When: 9:00am, Saturday, August 27
Where: Shults Park
Cost: $200 per team

Description: Beaufort County Parks and Leisure Services has organized an adult softball tournament. The double elimination tourney is to help pay hospital costs for Oscar Frazier. For more information on entering the tournament, call PALS at 757-1503.

Members of the community are also holding a barbecue and silent auction Sunday night:

When: 6:00pm, Sunday, August 28
Where: Community Center at Shults Park
Cost: $25 per person

Description: A fund-raiser for Mayor Pro Tem Oscar Frazier with Frogmore stew and barbeque, as well as beer, wine and entertainment. Also featuring live and silent auctions. Tickets can be purchased at Eggs N Tricities, Palmetto State Bank, Stock Farm Antiques, or call Lisa Sulka at 757-7660. Both Live and Silent auction donations made be made by calling Will Guscio at 757-7007.

A special fund has been set up to help the Frazier family pay medical expenses. Checks can be made out to the Oscar Frazier Assistance Fund and mailed to PO Box 327, Bluffton, SC 29910 or dropped off at Palmetto State Bank, 194 Bluffton Road.

Project Deep Well has agreed to act as a repository for donations. The Hilton Head Island based charity’s status as a 501(c)(3) organization will make donations tax deductible, and Deep Well will acknowledge each contribution with a letter of receipt. Checks should be made payable to the Deep Well Project and earmarked for the Oscar Frazier Assistance Fund. They can be sent to PO Box 5543, Hilton Head Island, SC 29938.
