Remains to Be Exhumed in 1972 Case

A missing persons case from 1972 is being reopened. The Beaufort County coroner is exhuming what are believed to be the remains of Michael Steven Ackey this morning from the Beaufort National Cemetery.

Ackey was reported missing in February of 1972. He was last seen getting into a vehicle with an unknown male. In 1978, skeletal remains were found in the White Hall Plantation Area of Lady's Island.

It was never certain if it was really Ackey, or how this person died. No suspects have been named in this case.
