New SC REAL ID's available statewide

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

South Carolina’s new REAL ID’s are now available at every DMV branch across the state.

The deadline to get a new REAL ID is now Sept. 30, 2020.

The REAL ID, or federally approved ID will be needed to board a domestic or commercial flight, enter a secure federal building, or visit a military institution, the DMV’s website said.

Without the REAL ID, a passport, military ID, or another federal identification would be needed to pass through airport security.

A REAL ID is not needed for the following:

  • To drive, vote, apply or receive federal benefits
  • Enter a federal facility that does not require and ID
  • Access or receive life-saving services
  • Participate in law enforcement proceedings such as jury duty

The state of South Carolina is under an extension for REAL ID implementation through October 2018, but the state anticipates being “fully compliant” with the federal law in the near future, a DMV spokesperson said.

“The US Congress passed the REAL ID Act of 2005 as a result of the 9/11 Commission’s recommendation to standardize government-issued identifications like driver’s licenses,” the DMV’s website said.

To get a REAL ID you will need to bring several documents to the SCDMV including:

  • Proof of identity such as your birth certificate or unexpired passport
  • Proof of a social security number such as a social security card or W-2 form.
  • Two proofs of current address such as current identification card and a bill no older than 90 days.
  • Proof of all legal names such as a marriage license

Some SCDMV locations have extended their weekend hours to make sure everyone can get their new ID, but the SCDMV said not to rush to get your new card.
