Action and interaction, just part of what one very able teacher employs to teach. Angela Rivers is a veteran educator from Garden City Elementary. She teaches first grade and today she's reading a book called If You Give a Mouse a Cookie.
"Students need a hands-on activity," she said. "And they need things that are visual because they become engaged in it."
To get the students involved, each child got one cookie, just like the mouse did in the story. Then, they got to draw their favorite scene from the book.
Today is going smoothly, but all days aren't like this. "Teaching first grade can be a challenge," Rivers said. "But it's worth it because it makes me feel good when I see they've reached their goal."
With 18 years of teaching experience and many more to come, Rivers will be helping many more students reach their goals, because teaching, she says, is what she was meant to do.
"I do believe this is my calling," she told us. "I wouldn't be doing anything else. I wouldn't want to be doing anything else."
And that's why she's this week's WTOC Top Teacher.
