FORT STEWART (WTOC) - The Winn Army Community Hospital is now a level four trauma center. They are also the only military hospital in Georgia that has that title.
The ribbon cutting was held Wednesday as they announced the hard-earned designation.
"It's not just for Fort Stewart. It is for the local community, all of these outlying counties that don't have trauma centers, so we will be able to see these trauma patients that are needing that lifesaving measure," says Michele Evans, Winn Army Community Hospital.
Having this level four trauma center located in Liberty County helps the surrounding community members receive care in the case of trauma related events before being transferred to a level one hospital.
Evans says that statistics show that anything further than 50 miles, the highly likelihood of death has been increased.
"Our goal here at level four is to stabilize and do all our lifesaving measures so they can get to level one at Savannah or Memorial for them to take on that higher level of care," Evans said.
Military members say having this level four center strengthens their commitment and partnership with the community while establishing Fort Stewart as a health readiness platform.
