The one year countdown to the 2019 PGA Professional Championship at Bluffton's Belfair Golf Club is underway.
The volunteers and members of Belfair helped kick off the tournament excitement Thursday with a clinic from PGA of America Vice President Suzy Whaley.
But the real purpose of the afternoon was to get the word out about the tournament, which has the nation's best teachers of golf competing for the prestigious championship and a spot in the PGA Championship next summer at Bethpage Black. The top 20 finishers qualify for a spot in the year's final major.
"We have men and women that compete in this event. For them, this is really the highlight of their careers is trying to attain the opportunity to play in a major," Whaley says. "There's nothing like that. And we have the opportunity to give them that here."
"There's 20 that qualify and just the experience you get to be in the clubhouse, and your locker is right there next to a tour player," says Carolinas PGA Section President. "Yes, that's exciting."
The PGA Professional Championship tees off on April 28, 2019 in Bluffton.
