Donations Sought for Katrina's Animal Victims

We know the toll Hurricane Katrina is taking on the people in the Gulf Coast and beyond. But one local group is reaching out to help some of the victims that are sometimes forgotten.

Many family pets and other animals are having to face the flood waters and related diseases on their own. Now one woman's idea has launched a much bigger effort to help.

Cat food is something Sarah Hyers doesn't sell, but bags now cover her showroom floor at the Screven Equine Center. The tragedy in the Gulf Coast prompted her to act.

A horse lover and supply store owner, she's collecting goods to help all kinds of animals left homeless by Hurricane Katrina.

"People with that kind of hurricane coming have to worry about their mothers, fathers, little kids, unfortunately not the animals," she said.

Shelters barely able to handle the thousands of evacuees can't take four-legged family members. "Lots of times, you turn them loose and hope and pray they survive," Hyers noted.

Those that do face a host of disease and illness due to lack of food, water and medical supplies. Hyers and others say the animals will need everything and it doesn't have to be new.

"The leash you're no longer using, the collar that didn't fit, the extra halter you have in the barn," she said.

They've teamed with Jeffers Equine, one of the largest animal supply companies for online donations to go straight to the Mississippi Animal Rescue League. The only thing the group here won't take is cash.

Hyers says most relief efforts will rightfully go to human victims. But animal lovers can help no matter where they live.
