SELMA, AL (WSFA) -

From the Civil War to civil rights, the city of Selma has played an important role in American history. In May, even more people will have the opportunity to learn about it.

Monday, Mayor Darrio Melton and Spectrum officials welcomed C-SPAN to town.

“We are very excited to know they are highlighting the city of Selma. I think it will speak volumes to those who are starting to show more interest in Selma,” said Melton.

As part of the C-SPAN’s 2018 Cities Tour, three producers are embedding themselves in the community for the week and will visit various literary and historic sites, interview local historians, non-fiction authors and conduct educational and community outreach in the area.

"You learn about what happened in Selma in your American history classes growing up. A lot of us have seen the movie Selma. Being here in the community is a different story entirely. To get to speak with people who lived an important part of American history and to have them tell their stories to us has been an honor and privilege,” said Ashley Hill, C-SPAN.

The stories and segments that will be explored by the national network include:

  • National Voting Rights Museum
  • National Park Service Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail
  • Edmund Pettus Bridge
  • Civil War in Selma
  • Old Cahawba Archaeological Park
  • Live Oak Cemetery
  • Marching Through the Flame: The Children of Selma Marched Through the Flame and Did Not Burn by Chief Henry E. Allen
  • The House by the Side of the Road: The Selma Civil Rights Movement Selma, a Bicentennial of History by Richie Jean Sherrod Jackson
  • Selma: A Bicentennial History First Edition by Alston Fitts Ph.D.
  • Mayor Darrio Melton
  • Fmr. Mayor James Perkins
  • Driving tour with Dianne Harris

In conjunction with its Spectrum cable partner, C-SPAN segments recorded in Selma will air on Book TV (on C-SPAN2, Spectrum channels 85, 764) and American History TV (on C-SPAN3, Spectrum channels 99, 765) throughout C-SPAN's special Selma weekend, May 19-20.

Selma will also have a special landing page on the C-SPAN Cities Tour website
