SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Byrd's Famous Cookie Company is gaining ground on its $4 million expansion project.
Wednesday morning, a ribbon cutting was held for the newest retail store and corporate headquarters located at 6700 Waters Avenue. The company's president, Geoff Repella, says the space is much needed as they work to increase productivity.
"The new oven is five times the length of the current oven, and we'll run between four and five times the speed, so we'll dramatically increase our capacity."
After 94 years in Savannah, now the deal has been made even sweeter for the cookie company to stick around. As the company set out to expand, they almost considered leaving Savannah.
"It wasn't much as we wanted to leave, we needed a bigger bakery, and so basically, we looked at existing bakeries; was it better to make or buy," Repella said.
Once city leaders got word of the possible move, they offered the company some treats of their own.
"We just had some meetings with them to work out some job incentives and take advantage of some programs the city has in place," Repella said.
The expansion project is expected to be complete some time mid-summer. The company plans to hire around 50 people, maybe even more.
