SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

The Chatham County Sherriff’s Office is raising awareness on how to properly dispose of unused medications.

Saturday is National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day. The sheriff’s office has placed drug drop-boxes at the Chatham County Courthouse located at 133 Montgomery Street, and at the sheriff's office on Carl Griffin Drive.

The drop boxes will be left at the locations all year. Loose pills, medication in bottles, and needles will all be accepted. Officials say this is a great way to destroy medications while keeping safety in mind.

”Well, it keeps a lot of drugs off the street. It keeps youngsters from going in their mother’s or grandmother’s cabinets and getting medication out of there that shouldn’t be there that they should have been destroyed because the loved one is passed away and everything," Sheriff John Wilcher said.

The medications are destroyed in the Chatham County Sheriff Office’s incinerator.
