HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (WTOC) - Out of the classroom and into kayaks.
Seventh graders from Hilton Head Island Middle School were at Shelter Cove Marina learned about the local environment as part of the Outside Foundations 'Kids in Kayaks' Program. The kids kayaked for about an hour with guides, exploring and learning about the marsh. There were also four interactive dockside learning stations teaching students about the dangers of pollution and sea life in the marsh.
"If we don't teach them to love the marsh and the waters that surround their community, then why would they protect it, why would they save it," said Jean Fruh, Outside Foundation. "They're the next generation of boaters."
The Kids in Kayaks Program serves all Hilton Head schools and is expanding into schools in Bluffton and parts of Beaufort.
