SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Hundreds of District 5 residents attended a town hall meeting Monday night for help applying for fire fee discounts.
City Manager Rob Hernandez broke down what residents can do inside their home to increase their discount. Having things like smoke alarms, fire extinguishers, and carbon monoxide detectors could lead to a five percent discount for each item. District 5 Alderwoman Estella Shabazz was against the fee from the start. She says now that she was outvoted by the city council and the fee was passed. She will at least make sure her district is informed and helped in any way moving forward.
"I will not, did not, and would not allow myself to not have you educated by offering some help with this fire fee," Alderwoman Shabazz said.
The hard deadline for the fire fee discount applications is June 1. Click here for more information.
