SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - The mission of Senior Citizens, Inc. is to ensure people have a life well lived, and the organization is introducing a new award to celebrate.
It's not always easy to tell when you've impacted someone's life, but for Irene Johnson, it is.
"It just brings back so many memories for me here. This was the best time of my life working with these people and the clients," Johnson said.
Johnson was a case manager at Employability, where she helped find positions for differently-abled adults in the mainstream workforce, and where she was welcomed back with fondness on a recent visit.
"It was the best job I ever have. I loved every minute, every day I worked. It wasn't like a job, it was what I loved to do," she said.
Johnson's passion for helping people will be honored next week when she receives Senior Citizens Inc.'s 'Legends, Leaders, and Life Well Lived ' award. SCI will give it out for the first time at a luncheon on May 11.
"Her life has been spent in service of family and helping people who have some disabilities. We decided to start the award so we could at least showcase some people who the community has said exemplify a live well lived," said Patti Lyons, President, Senior Citizens, Inc.
Johnson, who was an educator before she worked at Employability, was surprised to learn she had been selected because her career path was one that put other people ahead of personal accolades.
"I'm really shocked because what I did was not for recognition, and I'm really surprised I got picked to do it because it was my job. I guess that's the way I was raised, liking to help people and do what I could to make others feel loved and wanted and happy," Johnson said.
The public is invited to attend the Live Well Lived luncheon at The Landings Plantation Club on May 11. Ticket information is available here.
