Police arrest naked man for chasing kids in Statesboro park

STATESBORO, GA (WTOC) - The Statesboro Police Department arrested a man in Fair Road Park on Thursday after he allegedly chased children around the park while naked.

Officers received a call around 7:50 p.m. Thursday night. When they arrived at the park, they found Jarred Shane Woodruff, 23, from Valdosta, GA, sitting naked on the ground.

According to a press release from the department, the father of the "affected children" subdued Woodruff before police arrived. Residents are shocked.

"Have you ever heard of a naked man chasing kids on a playground in Statesboro," we asked one resident?

"No. Not at all," said parent, Quamaine Stimage.

Neither have police.

"This is extremely rare," said Cpt. James Winskey, Statesboro Police Department. "Extremely rare. I've been here since 1997 and I can't remember one just like this."

Witnesses told police Woodruff came running out of the woods and across the street, completely nude. That's when he started chasing their toddlers around the playground.

"He's completely naked. There were four small children on the playground."

Police were able to quickly arrest him after the father held him to the ground until officers arrived. So far, their investigation has revealed Woodruff was trying to take one of the four children. Parents playing with their children on the playground are in disbelief.

"Get him out of here. That's crazy. That doesn't make any sense. Somebody do something like that in Statesboro? We got kids out here running around," one parent said.

In the meantime, law enforcement suggests folks in the community stay on their toes.

"Always be vigilant when you're around the parks and look for strangers or anything that may be looking or starting too long. If you see something suspicious, just give us a call and we'll come check it out."

Woodruff did not harm any children at the park. Police took him to the Bulloch County Jail where they charged him with the following:

  • 4 counts Attempted Aggravated Assault with Intent to Rape a Child
  • 4 counts Attempted Child Molestation
  • 4 counts Attempted Cruelty to Children in the First Degree
  • 4 counts Attempted Kidnapping
  • 1 count Public Indecency - Felony
