Fake Uber driver arrested for rape in Statesboro

BULLOCH CO., GA (WTOC) - A 25-year-old Swainsboro man is behind bars after being charged with rape for an incident in November of 2017.

Bulloch County Sheriff's Office responded to the East Georgia Regional Medical Center in reference to a 19-year-old female who reported a sexual assault. Investigators say she explained that a person whom she stated told her and a friend he was an Uber driver, would provide them a ride home, then sexually assaulted her at his current residence on Hampstead Drive in Statesboro.

During the investigation, the suspect was identified as Matthew James Chalkley. The investigation continued through the interviewing of witnesses, the suspect, and by obtaining and submitting evidence to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation's crime lab. The case was submitted to the DA's office and based on the totality of the evidence collected and the interviews conducted, a warrant was issued for Chalkley's arrest.

Chalkley turned himself into the Bulloch County Sheriff's Office and has been charged with one count of rape. He is being held without bond.
