'Operation Empower Health' to provide no-cost health services to community

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Citizens could receive free health services at several different locations across the Greater Savannah area over the next week.

Operation Empower Health is a military training operation that provides no-cost healthcare to people in the community.

One of the military's biggest goals is to be prepared to do anything that they are called to do, and Operation Empower Health is helping with that preparation. Right now, almost 500 soldiers have been deployed to Savannah for this disaster training.

For the next nine days, military service members will be offering no-cost health care services for citizens 18 and older who are under-insured or non-insured.

"We go across the city and see so many needed situations; people who are uninsured or underinsured who just can't afford basic health needs, and for this blessing to occur, it's like an answer to a prayer. It's like oh God, you are looking out for us," said Mayor Pro-Tem, Carol Bell, Savannah.

Military members mainly made up of the United States Army, Air Force and Navy, are partnering with St. Joseph's/Candler and Georgia Southern University to offer the following services.

Medical

  • Physical exams
  • Sports exams
  • Patient education

Dental

  • Extractions
  • Fillings

Vision

  • Eye exams
  • Prescriptions
  • Fabrication of glasses

Veterinary

  • General exams
  • Spay/neuter (only at Civic Center, call (912) 354-6265 to schedule)
  • Rabies vaccinations

Those in charge of this mission say they're using this event as a training exercise so they can be able to take these services all over the world.

"Mostly everybody here, all the troops, for their civilian jobs, they work in healthcare as well. So, it's not more so the training to provide these services, it's more so setting it up and executing those operations," said Chief Daniel Vanzego, U.S. Navy.

Operation Empower Health begins May 10 and runs through May 18. No proof of income, residency or picture ID is required for services. Appointments will take place between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. on a first-come, first-served basis at the following locations:

  • Savannah Civic Center, 301 W. Oglethorpe Avenue
  • Garden City Gym/Rec Department, 160 Priscilla D. Thomas Road
  • Savannah State University, Tiger Arena
  • Georgia Southern University-Armstrong Campus, University Hall, 11935 Abercorn Street
