Six-year-old struck by police car in Port Wentworth

PORT WENTWORTH, GA (WTOC) -

A six-year-old boy is fighting for his life after being hit by a Port Wentworth police car.

According to the accident report, officers claim the six-year-old is in the wrong for running in the road. Officials say he ran into Cantyre Street causing the accident around 6:15 Wednesday night.

The lead investigators says the child is facing very serious injuries. His mother told WTOC he remains in ICU at Memorial Hospital.

The accident happened as the officer turned right off of Crossgate Road onto Cantyre Street. The police report showed this diagram of how the accident happened. Also, they claim the child did not yield to oncoming traffic.

Early Wednesday morning, GSP officials called it an unfortunate accident. They also said there is not a crosswalk at this road. The speed limit is 30 miles-per-hour, but we have not confirmed how fast the vehicle was traveling. GSP says the dash camera in the officer's car was activated and will be used in the investigation.

WTOC has reached out to Port Wentworth Police Department for a statement and we are waiting to hear back. This is a developing story.
