GLYNN CO., GA (WTOC) - Authorities say a standoff on Jekyll Island Thursday night lead to the discovery of an 83-year-old woman's body and the arrest of her husband.
Georgia State Patrol responded to Villas By The Sea condominiums Wednesday morning after they received a call to check on 82-year-old Joseph Hilton and his wife, Carol Anne Hilton. That welfare check turned into a brief standoff between GSP's SWAT team and Joseph Hilton. After Hilton's arrest, investigators discovered the body of his wife.
General Manager of Villas by the Sea says the Hiltons have always kept to themselves especially since they were both sick.
Stacy Carson from the GBI says since she has been assigned in that region for the last 11 years, they have never had a murder on Jekyll Island.
"She could not communicate, so she would always be sitting on the couch or in a chair, just kinda sitting there not really aware of her surroundings and again Mr. Hilton wanted to her caretaker. He did the best he could and then he also developed some health issues and it was very difficult for him to get around," said Villas by the Sea General Manager, Dick Coyle.
Coyle says he never thought the quiet couple living in the back of the condos would be the center of a murder investigation and standoff.
"At the time, he did not give an indication that there was anything seriously wrong and after further discussion with the officer and myself, he did admit that he had a weapon."
Coyle was near police when they were finally able to get Joseph Hilton out of the home.
"After they brought him out, I was able to talk to him for a few minutes and he was just distraught. His wife was deceased and he just said 'I just want to be left alone. I just want to be left alone," Coyle said.
Hilton is being held at the Glynn County Detention Center and is charged by the GBI with felony murder, malice murder, and aggravated assault. Carol Hilton's body has also been sent for an autopsy to determine her cause of death.
