Ask Benedictine, and they'll tell you. They expected this.
"When we've come to play, we've just been so much better," Cadets head coach Charlie Moore says.
The Cadets walked the walk Friday, claiming a second straight GHSA Class AA state soccer championship with a 7-0 blowout win over Putnam County.
"We don't play typical high school [soccer]. We move and pass the ball like you see a professional team do it," Moore says. "They know how to tire people. They know how to defend. They know how to possess, and they know how to finish."
That was evident at Mercer's Five Star Stadium, where the Cadets jumped on the War Eagles early and kept the pressure on throughout.
Sophomore forward Gavin Stewart made sure the Cadets weren't going home empty-handed. The BC star netted six goals Friday and was credited with an assist on a seventh.
Was it his best game ever?
"Probably," he laughs. "It's for sure up there."
The younger brother of Georgia Tech wide receiver Brad and Mercer volleyball player Sarah, Stewart's offensive prowess helped add another state title trophy to BC's collection. He called it a team victory.
"I'm very thankful that we could come out here as a team, and accomplish something like this," he says. "Two years, back to back, defending champs. It's just a great feeling."
Moore argues this wasn't Stewart's best game of the year, but he agrees it was a total team win.
"We didn't show any nerves today, which I worried we might because of the occasion," he says. "But we knew you weren't going to get four or five goals against us, especially three or four down."
It's the last state crown for the Cadets soccer program in Class AA. BC is moving up to Class AAA for the 2018-2019 school year, but Moore calls it a welcome challenge.
"We've got a really young team. We've got a really exciting team," he says. "We've got a bright future. We're going to embrace AAA. We're looking forward to AAA. I'm telling you now, we want to be back. That's two in a row. We want three."
