40th annual Bluffton Mayfest celebrates pre-Mother's Day traditions

BLUFFTON, SC (WTOC) - The 40th annual Mayfest was held in Bluffton on Saturday, where folks gathered in the historic downtown to enjoy out all the fun and entertainment.

There were arts and crafts, live music, and a ton of food. Mayfest first began back in 1978.

One organizer of the event says Mayfest is always the day before Mother's Day so children can get the chance to get a gift for their mom.

"It started out that way as an opportunity for kids to get gifts for their moms before Mother's Day the Saturday before," said Danielle Breidung, the organizer. "And we've kept up that tradition. Mayfest takes place all over the country and in other parts of the world as well. And their celebration at the end of winter of communities getting together to do lots of fun entertainment, so it makes sense have one here in Bluffton as well."

The festival also included a bunch of special contests. There was even a pie eating contest.
