SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Savannah Police are working to clean up violent activity on our streets.

Five men have been charged and indicted for gang activity. All of them were under investigation by authorities for quite some time. They are said to be a part of the gang known as the "Village Boys Soldiers," which Savannah Police Say is based out of the Carver Heights neighborhood. The arrested are Sciyheid Brant, 19; Pele Evans, 30; Tykeem Stewart, 20; Jamari Harris, 23; Leonard Roberts, 20.

"We were able to arrest several members, and working with the DA's office, get an indictment returned from the grand jury," said Sgt. Jonathan Puhala, Gang Unit Supervisor, Savannah Police Department.

Cleaning up the streets of Savannah, one gang at a time. Sgt. Puhala says this was the first major indictment for the gang unit at Savannah PD. As for the charges they're facing…

"They range from gun possession to use of guns during the commission of a crime and participation in criminal gang activity," he said.

But the work doesn't stop with these five men.

"I mean, we see this as the first step in that process, to be able to reduce gang and group violence in Savannah," Sgt. Puhala said.

Solving this problem isn't just the task of Savannah PD. The Chatham-Savannah Counter Narcotics Team also aids in these types of investigations.

"We have victims, they have suspects. We run them throughout databases, they do the same for us," said Everett Ragan, CNT Director.

Police want anyone who is a part of a gang to know there are ways you can get out of that criminal lifestyle. The only thing you need to do is reach out for help.

"Through the End Gun Violence Program, there are resources available to young people that want out of that lifestyle," Sgt. Puhala said. "I would encourage them to avail themselves of those resources."

The investigation into the Village Boys Soldiers took about a year to go through.
