SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

The Savannah-Chatham County Public School System is offering to replace Windsor Forest High School’s yearbook due to an inappropriate word in a photo.

In the yearbook, a photo of a student is shown with a racial slur written on a piece of paper.

The school system released the following statement on Friday morning:

District Administration has identified a photo with offensive content that was printed in the Windsor Forest High School yearbook. School officials have notified parents of the inadvertent printing of the material and requested that students return the yearbook to the school this week so that corrective action could be taken to remove the offensive content.

Students who return the book will have it returned to them on the same day.  In addition, the publisher was contacted and all further printing of the current edition of the yearbook has stopped.

Administrators at Windsor Forest High School regret this situation and have implemented new processes that provide greater content oversight and promote the positive delivery of material that properly represents the quality educational offerings provided at Windsor Forest High School.

Those processes include:

Continued implementation of diversity and sensitivity training in the upcoming year for students to ensure they develop as internationally minded students who recognize and embrace their common humanities.

In addition, school administration has already established additional layers of review with the school-based yearbook production team and the yearbook publishing vendor that includes:

·        Additional training for student/staff photographers to include a tiered review process for submission of all formal photos and snapshots

·        An enhanced and upgraded photo submission software/technology to capture errors and review picture quality

·        An additional tier for proof/editing of publication and an expanded committee review prior to printing and prior to final distribution

The Savannah-Chatham County Public School System regrets this incident and emphasizes the district's commitment to creating and maintaining a safe and respectful environment.
