SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Those wishing to pay their final respects for Savannah Police Officer Anthony Christie can do so on Thursday, May 31, and Friday, June 1.
Officer Christie was killed as he responded to a wreck along I-16 near the Dean Forest Exit, where a semi-truck crashed into his police cruiser.
Visitation will take place on two different days. It will run from 10 a.m. to noon on Thursday and Friday, and again from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday and Friday at the Fox and Weeks Hodgson Chapel at 7200 Hodgson Memorial Drive in Savannah. The public is invited to attend.
The funeral will take place on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Compassion Christian Church, located at 55 Al Henderson Blvd. in Savannah. Viewing will take place at the church from noon to 1:30 p.m. prior to the service. The funeral procession will begin on Little Neck Road, taking Highway 204/Abercorn Street to the funeral home. A complete map of the route may be found here.
Following the service, a motorcade will lead to the Fox & Weeks Hodgson Chapel. Road closures will occur along the motorcade route. Police officials say drivers should be prepared for road closures, traffic congestion, and delays between 3:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.
"The significance of this day is honoring and representing Officer Christie for everything that he has given to this community. His country, his family, and dedication to us also. This is a huge honor for us to be able to present Officer Christie in a mannerable way," said Sgt. Dana Purvis, Savannah Police Department. "We encourage everyone to show respect to all officers and pray for all of our officers, especially Officer Christie and his family. This is our time of mourning and this is how we process our mourning - by giving honor to his family and the department."
Anyone who wishes to show support to SPD and the Christie family is invited to set up along the processional route. SPD recommends those supporters be in place by 3:15 p.m. to avoid traffic closures along the route.
