SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - It's summertime now, which means it's time for some baseball in the Coastal Empire.
We are just hours away from the start of the Savannah Bananas third season as they play host to the Macon Bacon on May 31 at Historic Grayson Stadium.
The team has been getting in lengthy workouts all week to prepare for their first game. They even have some cool limited edition green jerseys to show off on opening night.
Hundreds of Banana fans made their way to historic Grayson Stadium Monday for the season kickoff party Fan Fest. The team was there to sign autographs and take pictures after showing off their skills during batting practice and a home run derby.
For the collegiate summer team, they are coming to Savannah from across the country, and this is their first time seeing the Bananas fan base.
Each year there are new players, and for 2018 there's a new coach as well. Tyler Gillum from South Mountain Community College in Arizona told WTOC the energy of the fans this week has been huge.
Tickets for opening day sold out almost five months ago. So, the bananas are expecting a big turnout Thursday for their new opponent, the Macon Bacon.
This season will be a homecoming for one of the players. Former Calvary Day standout, Rudy Amaya, is on the roster this year. The right-handed pitcher has joined his hometown team, and says he's excited to play for the team he's witnessed become a Hostess City phenomenon.
Amaya says he's still amazed by what the Bananas have become.
"But it's this connection between the players, the fans, the community, the stadium, and everything comes together and culminates and all of a sudden, there's this big party of 4,000 people for these guys every single night," said Jared Orton, President, Savannah Bananas.
First pitch is Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. Again, this season opener against the Macon Bacon is sold out, but you can check ticket availability and prices for future games by clicking here.
