SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - An early Juneteenth celebration is happening this weekend at the Telfair Museums.
Juneteenth is a holiday that commemorates the abolition of slavery in Texas back in 1865. Telfair Museums is honoring the holiday with two events.
The first is the Juneteenth Lecture on Friday, June 8, featuring the story of Reverend George Liele, a preacher who was born enslaved and later founded the First Bryan Baptist Church.
The next event is the popular Juneteenth Free Family Day, set for Saturday, June 9.
Both events are free and open to the public.
