BLUFFTON, SC (WTOC) -

WTOC is kicking off its Celebrate the Summer Tour on Friday. For the next several weeks, WTOC will be showcasing cities around the Coastal Empire and Lowcountry and making sure residents are prepared for the hurricane season.

On Friday, June 8, some of the WTOC team will be in Bluffton for the kick off to our Celebrate the Season Tour.

The tour will kick off in Bluffton, which is recognized for its Lowcountry charm. Coastal Living recently announced this year's Happiest Seaside Towns in America, and Bluffton made the number five spot. Just over 16,000 people live in Bluffton, and it continues to grow with new homes and businesses popping up every day.

Bluffton is surrounded by water, and as beautiful as it can be out near the water, it can also be a very dangerous location during hurricane season. We're just eight days into the 2018 hurricane season and parts of the Gulf Coast have already experienced a named storm.

Emergency management officials in Bluffton say leaders have been meeting regularly to make sure the area is ready to go if a tropical storm or hurricane makes its way to the Lowcountry.

Before hurricane season began, Bluffton Police hosted several different hurricane preparedness workshops to make sure they're residents were ready to go.

A sergeant with the Bluffton Police Department says what makes Bluffton unique is that many of the residents living there are not originally from the Lowcountry. For many, this year's hurricane season will be their first, so it's important they know exactly what to do in this type of emergency.

"We can't stress that enough. Now is the time to prepare. We're almost a week into hurricane season, we've already seen some activity in the tropics. So, we want people to prepare the best they can," says Sgt. Mike Banyov, Emergency Management, Bluffton PD.

Everyone at WTOC wants to make sure you're prepared for whatever comes our way during the hurricane season. The WTOC Storm Chaser will be at Cinemark Bluffton 12 Friday afternoon along with some of the First Alert Weather Team. All are invited to come out, ask questions and check out the Storm Chaser from 4 to 7:30 p.m.

Additionally, WTOC will be "celebrating the summer" all month long. Each week, we'll be showcasing a different city. Next week, will be heading to Statesboro.
