WALTHOURVILLE, GA (WTOC) - A South Carolina man shot himself Monday morning in Liberty County after holding his ex-girlfriend and her daughter hostage for several hours.
Liberty County investigators tell us 37-year-old Vertis Langley held the woman and her daughter hostage at a home in Walthourville. The situation unfolded at a home in the 100 block of Shelia Drive around 1 a.m. The woman and her 21-year-old daughter were able to make it out of the home safely.
Thankfully, they were able to escape. Police and sheriff's investigators negotiated with the man for hours, even shooting tear gas into the house to force him outside. Then, they heard gunshots. When they went in, they found him wounded.
Langley was rushed to Memorial University Medical Center where he later died.
"It was determined through the conversation that he intended to commit suicide. He told them so over the telephone," said Chief Deputy John Long, Liberty County Sheriff's Office.
