RNs Train to Treat Hurricane Victims

To meet medical needs caused by hurricane damage, the Savannah chapter of the American Red Cross is training registered nurses how to deal with people in the major disaster areas. This afternoon, a group of about 20 nurses from area hospitals and the heath department practiced scenarios with one another to help them prepare to treat evacuees who are either sick, injured or know someone who has died.

"It gives them an idea of what the protocols are for Red Cross, what they can be expected to see when they're on a disaster site and what we can do to help medical needs with these clients," said Paula Tillman, RN and Red Cross volunteer.

Many registered nurses will be deployed to Red Cross agencies here and in other areas of Georgia.
