Savannah Firefighters Return from Gulf Coast

The Savannah Fire Department's "strike team" just returned from the badly damaged Louisiana coast. They spent the last nine days searching for and rescuing victims trapped in their homes.

As more fire fighters train for possible deployment to the troubled areas of the gulf region, these fire fighters say they've never encountered anything like this in all their lives. They say the devastation in Saint Bernard Parish was almost too much to bear.

"Their fire department was overtaxed," said Master Firefighter Joe Shaw. "They had 100 fire fighters and the first five days, they rescued 2,000 people. And they had to feed them and take care of them, because they had no other help."

The Savannah Fire Department has another strike team deployed. Those firefighters are expected to return sometime next week.
