Many of our clergy work outside the church walls to make a difference in our community. So on this National Day of Prayer, the Kiwanis Club of Beaufort honored local pastors for their role in the community. As part of the ceremony, they named Dr. Elijah Washington the Kiwanis Club Clergy Person of the Year.
Not only does Dr. Washington serve as the pastor of the First African Baptist Church on St. Helena, but he's also a local surgeon who has touched many lives within the community, especially those less fortunate.
"This came really as a surprise, but it's a pleasant surprise and it came at a time when I needed an uplifting," Dr. Washington said. "This provided that uplift."
Kiwanis Club members say they honor a local pastor each year as a way to show appreciation to all they contribute to our community on a daily basis.
