Suspect accused of stabbing customer at gas station on Hilton Head Island

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office is investigating a stabbing that occurred at a gas station on Hilton Head Island.

It happened inside the Kangaroo Express gas station at 2 Lagoon Road. Investigators say 34-year-old Kenyon Sanders of Estill stabbed a male customer with a knife and then took the wounded man's wallet from the counter. He then got away from the store in a beach cruiser type bicycle.

The victim was initially transported to the Hilton Head Island Regional Medical Center by Hilton Head Island Fire Rescue paramedics for treatment. He has since been flown to Savannah Memorial for more intensive treatment.

Sheriff's office investigators have obtained warrants for Sanders' arrest for attempted murder, possession of a weapon in the commission of a violent crime, and petit larceny. Officers from Coastal Security who were aware of the incident spotted the suspect while patrolling the area of Coligny Plaza. They notified sheriff's deputies who arrested Sanders without incident. They recovered a knife during a search.
