Two hundred and 25 members of the 165th Airlift Wing of the Georgia Air National Guard are back from helping the hurricane relief efforts in Mississippi. The unit got their orders on September second. Two days later, they were in Gulfport, Mississippi.
The men and women operated three food, water and ice distribution points. They also assisted helicopter drop-offs for people who couldn't be reached by car or truck, and served up more than one million MREs.
"We went in found our own food sources," explained Major Bob Frankosky. "We loaded them up on tractor trailers and brought food to these people to keep them going. Had it not been for that, they would have run out of food around the 5th or 6th of September."
This was not a mandatory mission for the 165th. Those who went were volunteers.
