Alma man shoots self in leg to avoid court

ALMA, GA (WTOC) - Officers with Alma Police Department arrested 57-year-old Jerome White for false report of a crime and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon early on Monday morning.

White told officers that arrived at the Bacon County Hospital that he had been shot at his home on Taylor Road. Officers quickly became suspicious and questioned White about the incident.

He confessed that he had shot himself in the leg to avoid going to court on a separate criminal offense. White was supposed to appear in Bacon County Superior Court on Monday morning to respond to charges of aggravated assault and simple battery-family violence.

White had initially been taken into custody for allegedly beating a child with his closed fist until the child lost consciousness when he allegedly began to strangle the child before others stepped in.

White is now being held at the Coffee County Jail.
