Eagles' excitement for season opener evident

Lunsford looking for excitement in season opener

STATESBORO, GA (WTOC) - The Chad Lunsford era has been underway in Statesboro for a few months officially, but it really feels like it will be here Saturday.

Georgia Southern opens the 2018 season this weekend when they host South Carolina State to kick off the first full season under the Eagles' new head coach.

On Monday, the team held their first game week press conference of the season and the excitement was evident.

"I might just jump out screaming man. It's going to be pretty fun though," laughs junior CB Kindle Vildor. "We can't wait to go out there and compete against somebody else for the first time."

"There's definitely excitement," says redshirt sophomore QB Shai Werts. "We definitely have a chip on our shoulder coming off that 2-10 season."

Lunsford says he's happy that the excitement isn't just limited to the Eagles' locker room. Despite a program-worst 2-10 finish in 2017, the Georgia Southern faithful are eagerly anticipating 2018.

The top man in Statesboro says he hopes to see that excitement result in a rejuvenated energy at Paulson Stadium.

"I want to see a team come out there and feed off of our crowd. We talked about it all offseason: the power of Paulson," Lunsford says. "I just want to see a lot of excitement in our guys and I know that comes from our crowd. That comes from our fans. I'm just looking forward to the place being packed, and showing our guys that Eagle Nation is fully behind them."

The Eagles are 10-1 in their last 11 home openers. Kickoff Saturday against South Carolina State is set for 6:00.
