EFFINGHAM CO., GA (WTOC) - The Effingham County team of United Way kicked off their fundraiser, "Sprint to the Finish Line" Wednesday at the Effingham College and Career Academy.
The packed house pulled in community members from all across the county looking to the end goal. The goal is set for $348,000 and they have just about nine weeks to reach that. There's over $102,000 raised so far, and over half of that is from the Effingham County School District alone.
In Effingham County, almost 60 nonprofits are funded through United Way. That's why leaders say Wednesday's kickoff was so important for the years to come.
"There is nothing like what may be the only meal that a senior will receive to them and looking into their grateful eyes. for providing perspective and inspiring gratitude. You know just how grateful you are after you do that," said Deb Thompson, President, United Way of Coastal Georgia.
