Hometown Hero--Mamie Lake

A small church needs almost everything that a large church needs: flowers, candles, church bulletins. It just has fewer people to help make everything happen. At St. Andrew's Independent Episcopal church off Waters Avenue in Savannah, the congregation counts on church secretary Mamie Lake to make sure that everything goes smoothly.

"Bulletin, phones, letters, anything they need to do," said Tina Stetson.

Joshua Grote is the church's interim minister when not working his regular job at Home Depot. Carl Kleeman doubles as senior warden when not engineering stuff for the Industrial Company. But Mamie Lake is the glue that holds everything together.

"She's always very pleasant and very happy to do whatever it takes to keep this church growing," said Kleeman.

We should mention that she didn't start her duties yesterday. "Long as I can remember," said Kleeman. "Twenty-five or 30 years."

For her diligence in carrying out the duties of church secretary at St. Andrew's and for the sweet smile she brings to every task, Mamie Lake is this week's WTOC Hometown Hero.
