Operation Holiday Heroes

The holidays are right around the corner, but they won't necessarily be happy holidays for some. That's why agencies in Beaufort County are joining forces this year to help make the holidays bright for needy families.

Asking for help isn't always easy, but Doneza Heyward is happy to know she's going to be able to get the help she needs for her children. "I want them to have a nice Christmas," she said.

Through Operation Holiday Heroes, the Heywards and many other families in our community will receive food and toys this Christmas, and Doneza says that's a big relief. "Being a single mother with two children, it is."

Operation Holiday Heroes is a collaboration between the Salvation Army, Department of Social Services, Bluffton Self Help, Deep Well, Toys for Tots, Beaufort Regional Chamber of Commerce, and the United Way.

Officials at the Salvation Army say by combining efforts, they can give more help to more people.

"We don't have agencies competing against each other," said Capt. Hank Harwell. "Instead we're working together. It helps really maximize our resources."

Mickey Hagood knows firsthand what this collaboration can do. They've helped her family in the past. "They had bikes," she said. "Everything they asked for, they got it."

But this year, Mickey says she needs the help more than ever. "It means a lot to me because a lot of my family members are from New Orleans and so I have a lot of Katrina evacuees," she said. "I just got done picking them up last night so I'm here to help them enjoy their Christmas. They lost animals, toys, and clothing, so I'm here to help make their Christmas the best I can."

And that's what Operation Holiday Heroes is all about.
