Top Teacher--Barbara Martin-Golden

Barbara Martin-Golden Barbara Martin-Golden

When one educator at Saint James Catholic School stands before a class, she draws on 30 years of experience. Barbara Martin-Golden doesn't teach your standard math or science class. In addition to language arts, she also teaches religion to middle schoolers.

"I enjoy this age," she said. "I've always taught sixth grade and it's unique to be with them."

Today's assignment--a character evaluation. The students have to judge themselves on things like respectfulness, friendliness, and and leadership ability. Then the evaluation will be sent home with their progress reports.

It's an assignment that helps the kids to better themselves, one of the things Golden loves so much about teaching. "Watching their minds blossom," she said. "And of course being here at Saint James, I feel as though I'm with a team of top teachers, not just myself."

So if she weren't teaching, what would Golden be doing? Operating a daycare she says, because kids are her calling. "I have a 13-month-old grandbaby I just adore. So, I would be the grandmother's babysitter."

For her love of the job and her students, Barbara Martin-Golden is this week's WTOC Top Teacher.
