Top Teacher--Cindy Porter

For most educators, teaching is a calling. And that's the case in Cindy Porter's special education class.

"We have K through second grade," she said. "Some need help catching up to grade level and others need help with language development, things like that."

With 26 years of teaching under her belt, Porter knows for sure this is the job for her. And she prefers helping kids with special needs. "One year I taught regular education and I didn't like it at all."

Probably because teaching kids like these, Porter says, is what she was meant to do. "I think that I was called when I was a senior in high school. And when the Lord puts a calling on your heart, it's best to follow, then your path will be pretty clear from there on out."

When in high school, she and some other students went to a school for kids with disabilities. It was there that she had the chance to work with a little boy with Down syndrome. From there, she believed her fate was sealed and she pursued a teaching career.

Since then, she's come to love her job more and more with each day, and feels passionate about the way these kids are viewed.

"Special education doesn't mean lower expectations anymore," Porter said.

To her, special needs means just what it says. "Every child works individually, so they're like a classroom within themselves," she said.
