WWII Monument to Be Dedicated Downtown

Some veterans from World War II may soon have their own monument in downtown Savannah. Yesterday, the Chatham County Veterans Council held a ceremony in Oglethorpe Square. They wanted city leaders to reserve a space there for the monument, which will be dedicated and finished on the Fourth of July this coming year.

Organizers say almost 500 Savannahians lost their lives fighting for global freedom, and it's time to remember them locally.

"It is anticipated to be an area of contemplation as well as a sign of public remembrance for those citizens of Savannah," said Francis Hayes of the Pulaski International Institute.

The veterans council wants Savannah City Council to vote to reaffirm its spot in Oglethorpe Square.
