Traffic Stop Yields Carjacking Suspect

A routine traffic stop turned into a bomb scare and more this afternoon and in the end netted a carjacking suspect. Savannah-Chatham police officers discovered suspicious containers in the trunk of the vehicle. Savannah Fire and Safety and metro police bomb personnel shut down Hall Street between Martin Luther King, Jr., Boulevard and Montgomery Street while they inspected the contents of the containers.

The robot was called out because the containers displayed hazardous material labels. The health department ultimately cleared the substance as safe for transport.

The driver of the car, who was initially stopped for a seatbelt infraction, is in jail tonight. The car was reported stolen during a carjacking about a week ago in Port Royal, SC.
