Chief Flynn on Retirement

Savannah-Chatham police chief Dan Flynn's retirement becomes official at the end of the year. Chief Flynn says he's most proud of heading up the merger of the county and city police departments, and of the department's role in the G-8 summit.

Though he's proud of his record, he says he's not inclined to toot his own horn. "Chief of police is an appointed office, not an elected office," he said. "The chief doesn't have to seek reelection, so it really is not appropriate for the chief of police to be out pounding his chest when there are successes and so forth. I don't see it as appropriate to compete with elected officials for news coverage."

Flynn has been chief of police the last five years.
