Neighbors React to Weekend Shootings

Investigators are still looking for the shooting suspect. Investigators are still looking for the shooting suspect.

Investigators in Beaufort County are searching for a man they say shot and killed a Burton man and injured another. We talked with neighbors in the apartment complex where it all happened.

Charles and Lillian Erlandson were surprised when they heard a murder and shooting took place in their complex at the Oaks at Broad River apartments.

"I thought, 'Holy mackerel,'" Lillian told us.

The couple say they didn't know anything about it until Lillian went to get the morning paper and saw the police cars. "I didn't hear any ambulances, no noise or anything," she said.

Investigators say it all happened 12:30am Saturday morning when Charles Green, Jr., and three other men got into an argument in the parking lot. Derrick Boykin, 25, Devon Jamal Ward, 21, and Bennie Pusha, 21, got out of their vehicle. That's when investigators say 26-year-old Green got out of the SUV he was driving and began firing at the three men.

Boykin died at the scene. Ward was taken to the hospital.

The Erlandsons have lived there for three years and say this is the first time anything like this has happened there. "We thought it was a secure area, but apparently it isn't," said Charles Erlandson.

However, they, like many other residents we talked with, are considering it an isolated incident. "I'm not really concerned," Charles said.

Neither is Lillian, "because it's a real quiet area."

Deputies found the Ford Excursion Green was driving on Castle Rock Road with the tires shredded. But they're still looking for Green. He is considered armed and extremely dangerous. If you know where he is, call Beaufort County dispatch at 843.524.2777.
