Garage Gone, Ellis Square Two Years Out

The City Market parking garage in Savannah is no more. This afternoon, demolition crews tore down the last remaining steel beams.

For the better part of two weeks, crews have been tearing down the multi-level garage. Now work will be done to clear out the area so crews can come in and start digging below the surface to construct underground parking, with something long-anticipated at street level.

"A new, redesigned Ellis Square that has a traditional feel, but yet a very contemporary use," said Alderman Van Johnson.

City officials say the new Ellis Square will be much like the way James Edward Oglethorpe designed it when Savannah was founded. It will take about two years to complete.
