A big accident shut down a portion of Highway in Effingham County for a while today. It happened around 2:30pm this afternoon on Highway 80 between Spring Hill Road and Sand Hill Road.
Georgia State Patrol says the driver of a car traveling behind an 18-wheeler on Highway 80 passed another car, and as it was merging back into its original lane, it rear-ended a Nissan Maxima. The Maxima hit the big rig then spun into a ditch, where it burst into flames.
The Maxima's driver, Jack Cowert, died at the scene. LifeStar flew his passenger, Joe Oliver, to the hospital with serious injuries.
Troopers arrested the driver of the first car for driving under the influence. More charges could be pending.
Georgia State Patrol reopened the highway late this afternoon.
