Fifth Grader Wins Spelling Bee

How is your spelling under pressure? West Chatham Elementary students lined up this afternoon to take a shot at first place in their annual spelling bee, in which 18 students tried to make it to the top.

The competition started with simple words like "dashing" and ended with tougher words like "repetitious."

In the end, two fifth graders--Charlotte French and Larissa Dunham--battled it out. Charlotte spelled two words in a row correctly, finally winning the spelling bee with the word "obedient."

"I practiced and my mom and I used flashcards and I got a lot wrong, but then we finally figured it out," she said.

Charlotte will now go on to the Chatham County finals, which will be held at Savannah State in February.

Our own Sonny Dixon served as the official caller this afternoon.
