Internal Investigation at Port Royal PD Complete

An investigation into an illegal video gambling ring in Beaufort County which may have connections to the Port Royal Police Department has wrapped up.

In December, the Town of Port Royal requested the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office do an internal investigation into the police department after the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division shut down two businesses operating illegal video poker machines in the area.

The controversy began when it was discovered Capt. Roger Karr with the Port Royal PD was engaged to one of the three people arrested in the illegal gambling ring.

So to clear up any allegations, the internal investigation was ordered. And now it's complete.

"The only thing I can tell you regarding the internal investigation is that it is complete," said Port Royal town manager Van Willis. "Obviously it is confidential. I have asked the chief to review a portion of the internal affairs investigation. He has provided an analysis. I am reviewing what he has submitted to me at this point, and we'll more than likely bring it to some sort of resolution on Monday."

Willis says both Capt. Karr and Chief James Caiden are still employed at the police department at this time. We will keep you updated.
