Hunter Army Airfield's Getting a new Hanger

The largest construction project in the Georgia Army National Guard's history is underway at Hunter Army Airfield.

Sunday morning the guard broke ground for a new 87 thousand square foot maintenance hanger.

The sixteen and a half million dollar project will house the 131st Aviation Regiment's five C-H 47 Chinook Helicopters. It should be complete by the middle of next year and will give the Army National Guard room to grow.

Later this year a new Aviation Ground Maintenance Unit will come in. For now, the guard share space with the Army. The new hanger will be their first stand alone building at Hunter Army Airfield.

Lieutenant Colonel Vernon Atkinson is a flight commander for the guard and says the new hanger "gives us a sense of permanency."

More good news for the guard: construction on a new Armory will begin in three years.
